Free internet speed test
Check your connection before your next film. Speed on a Date measures download speed, upload speed, latency and jitter using Cloudflare’s speed test engine.
Test my internet connection ↗How to run a useful network test
- Pause downloads, streaming and other heavy internet use on your devices.
- Use the device and connection you want to measure. For a closer look at your broadband connection, try Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi.
- Open the app and select “Test my connection”. Keep the tab open until the test finishes.
- Repeat at different times if you want to understand how your connection changes.
The test uses up to approximately 188 MB of transfer payload, plus protocol overhead. Be mindful of your mobile data allowance.
What do the numbers mean?
Download speed is how quickly data reaches your device. Upload speed measures how quickly your device sends data. Both are shown in megabits per second (Mbps).
Latency is the time a response takes, measured in milliseconds. Jitter describes variation in that response time. Lower latency and steadier timing can help calls and interactive apps.
Why do internet tests give different results?
A speed test measures the path between your device and a particular server at a particular time. Wi-Fi interference, other traffic, test sizes, routing and server location can all change the result. This test reports your connection to Cloudflare; it does not promise the maximum speed advertised by your internet provider.
Very fast connections may need larger transfers than this test uses for a fuller picture. Read the Cloudflare methodology to understand the engine.
Estimate movie download time
If a movie card includes a file size, the app can estimate a download time from your measured speed. A rough calculation is file size in megabytes × 8 ÷ download Mbps. Actual transfers depend on the file host and network conditions.
